The True Meaning of Christmas

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Is Santa Clause the true meaning of Christmas? Of course not, but there are probably many in our world who either don't know that or at least don't live like they know it. Most people I know would agree that the birth of Jesus is the true meaning of Christmas, but do people's lives reflect that belief?

Let me ask another question, one that will probably offend some, but I am okay with that. Is there room for both? Is there room for Santa and the birth of Christ? I know of many church people who would cringe at the fact that a church might celebrate Santa. However, we are celebrating Santa Clause this year. Why? Because Santa is where most people are, especially unchurched people. What is the goal? The goal is to meet people where they are and then teach them the real meaning of Christmas, which is the birth of Christ.

Think about this: Jesus left the portals of heaven to meet us where we are. He hung out with the sinners so that He could teach them the truth about who He is and what their true meaning in life is all about. Shouldn't the church do the same? I think so.

So my confession for the day is this: The true meaning of Christmas is Jesus meeting us where we are.
